Journal History and Development
The Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine has evolved significantly since its establishment in 2001 by the Malaysian Public Health Physicians’ Association. What began as a modest publication platform for Malaysian public health research has grown into a Scopus-indexed journal that attracts submissions from researchers across Asia, the Middle East, and beyond.
The journal’s growth reflects the broader development of public health research capacity in Malaysia and the region. Over more than two decades of publication, MJPHM has documented Malaysia’s epidemiological transition, the evolution of its healthcare system, emerging infectious disease threats, and the growing burden of non-communicable diseases. The journal’s archive thus serves not only as a repository of individual research findings but as a chronicle of public health challenges and responses in the Malaysian context.
Publication Format and Scope
MJPHM accepts articles across all sub-disciplines of public health medicine. The journal’s scope encompasses epidemiology, biostatistics, nutrition, family health, infectious diseases, health services research, gerontology, child health, adolescent health, behavioural medicine, rural health, chronic diseases, health promotion, public health policy and management, health economics, occupational health, and environmental health.
Regular volumes typically contain a mix of original research articles, review papers, and short communications. Special volumes have been published in conjunction with national public health conferences and to address topics of particular timeliness, such as the health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2018 Special Volume, for example, included focused research on ageing, physical activity, and geriatric health—reflecting growing national attention to Malaysia’s demographic transition towards an ageing society.
Quality Assurance and Indexing
All manuscripts submitted to MJPHM undergo a rigorous double-blind peer review process. The editorial board comprises experienced public health researchers and practitioners from Malaysian universities and research institutions. The journal adheres to international publishing ethics standards and requires authors to declare conflicts of interest and funding sources.
MJPHM is indexed in Scopus and appears in the Scimago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) database. The journal carries the ISSN 1675-0306 for its print edition and 2590-3829 for the electronic version. Inclusion in these international databases enhances the visibility and citation potential of published research, contributing to the global evidence base in public health.
Contributing to MJPHM
Researchers interested in contributing to the journal can find detailed author guidelines on the MJPHM website. The journal welcomes submissions from both Malaysian and international researchers, with a focus on research that is relevant to public health in Malaysia, the ASEAN region, or the broader global context. Manuscripts should follow the format specified in the author guidelines, with references formatted according to the US National Library of Medicine style used in Index Medicus.
