About the Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine

The Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine (MJPHM) is the official journal of the Malaysian Public Health Physicians’ Association. Founded in 2001, MJPHM has served as a vital platform for the dissemination of public health research across Malaysia and the broader Southeast Asian region. The journal operates under an open-access model, making its published research freely available to researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and the general public.

MJPHM accepts and publishes original research articles, review papers, short communications, and case reports across the full spectrum of public health disciplines. This includes epidemiology, biostatistics, nutrition, family health, infectious diseases, health services research, gerontology, child health, adolescent health, behavioural medicine, rural health, chronic diseases, health promotion, public health policy and management, health economics, occupational health, and environmental health.

The journal has been ranked by Scimago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) and has maintained a consistent publication schedule, typically releasing two to three volumes per year. Its editorial office is based at the United Nations University – International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

Selected Research Areas

Infectious Disease Epidemiology

MJPHM has published extensively on infectious disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, and control measures relevant to the Malaysian context. Articles have covered dengue epidemiology, tuberculosis awareness and management, COVID-19 pandemic impacts on healthcare workers, and emerging infectious disease threats. These publications have contributed to evidence-based public health responses at both state and national levels.

Non-Communicable Disease Prevention

With Malaysia experiencing rapid epidemiological transition, MJPHM has served as a key repository for research on NCD prevention and management. Published studies address topics including obesity prevalence, diabetes self-management, cardiovascular risk factors, cancer screening practices, and the effectiveness of community-based health promotion interventions.

Occupational and Environmental Health

The journal features significant research on occupational stress, workplace safety, environmental health hazards including haze-related health impacts, and the health of specific occupational groups including healthcare workers, industrial employees, and agricultural workers. These studies have informed workplace health policies and environmental health regulations in Malaysia and internationally.

Mental Health and Psychosocial Research

MJPHM has increasingly published research on mental health topics, including depression, anxiety, and stress prevalence among various population groups, psychological impacts of natural disasters and pandemics, and the effectiveness of mental health interventions. This body of work reflects growing recognition of mental health as a public health priority in Malaysia.

Maternal and Child Health

Research published in MJPHM on maternal and child health encompasses antenatal care practices, breastfeeding promotion, childhood immunisation, nutritional status of vulnerable populations including the Orang Asli communities, and maternal mortality reduction strategies. These studies have contributed to improvements in Malaysia’s maternal and child health indicators.
