ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to validate Summary Diabetes Self-Care Activities into Malay version for adults. This was a cross-sectional study where the recruitment was conducted in Seremban 2 Health Clinic, Negeri Sembilan from December 2014 until January 2015. The validation of SDSCA questionnaire involves three phases; translation, pre-test and fieldwork. Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach’s alpha while Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was conducted to determine the validity of SDSCA. There are two results were generated for validity. The first analysis used items 1, 2, 3 and 5A (Diet); items 5 and 6 (Exercise); 7 and 8 (Sugar); and items 9 and 10 (Foot care). The second analysis used items 1, 2, 3 and 5A (Diet); items 5 and 6 (Exercise); 7 and 8 (Sugar); and items 9A and 11A (Foot care). Both approaches in the analysis used same dataset except for the selection of the items under domain of foot care. A total of 225 patients with a mean (SD) age of 53.5 (9.8) years participated in the study. The internal consistencies for the main domains were between 0.651 and 0.905. The factor construct of SDSCA-Malay was successful with minimum factor loading of 0.6 since the factorizations are following the original version with four main domains (Diet, Exercise, Sugar and Foot care). The Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) for Malaysian Adults is reliable and valid to be used for Malaysian setting.
